Founded by Grégory Blain and Hervé Dixneuf in Saint-Étienne, Atelier BL119 works across industrial and spatial design. Their process often begins by questioning an existing object, testing a material or identifying a function that could be approached differently, with simplicity remaining central to the outcome.
Our work is influenced by many different elements but always seeks to strike the harmony between form and function. Foregoing the superfluous, we aim to find solutions within details that allow us to define the right form, informed by simplicity. Approaching our work in a pragmatic way allows to create singular objects that are at once useful and aesthetically surprising.
Atelier BL119: A Practical Approach to Design
Founded in Saint-Étienne in 2007 by Grégory Blain and Hervé Dixneuf, Atelier BL119 approaches design through observation and experimentation. Rather than working to a fixed method, the studio may begin with an overlooked need, the possibilities of a material or an opportunity to reconsider how an existing object is used.
This thinking can be seen in the studio’s collaboration with Muuto. The Tub Jug reinterprets the traditional jug by integrating the handle into the ceramic body, creating its recognisable central opening. It is a straightforward example of Atelier BL119’s approach: familiar function reconsidered through construction and use.
