Jacques Deneef: From Artistic Practice to Furniture

Belgian designer and artist Jacques Deneef has built a multidisciplinary practice spanning furniture, interiors and art. Alongside his commercial design work, he creates artworks from found and discarded objects, transforming existing materials into new compositions. This interest in reworking materials and surfaces carries into his furniture, where texture and shape often become defining elements rather than decoration applied afterwards.

His work for Ethnicraft demonstrates this particularly well. Collections such as Roller Max use repeated timber sections to build curved, textured surfaces across tables and storage, while Grooves uses hand-carved markings to alter the appearance and tactile quality of solid teak. Rather than relying on ornament, Deneef works directly with the furniture's surface and construction to create pieces that reveal more of the material itself.

This feels much more like Deneef to me. We aren't trying to turn “rhythm, texture and form” into his design philosophy. We are explaining something tangible about his practice and then showing how it manifests in the furniture.
