Based in Rotterdam, British designer Phil Procter works across furniture, lighting and spatial design. His practice is closely connected to manufacturing, drawing on the city’s network of craftspeople and specialist producers to explore materials through making and experimentation.
Metal is a recurring material in Procter’s work. Years of working with it have developed a deep understanding of its possibilities, from forming and folding to finishing. This knowledge allows material and production to become part of the design process rather than simply a means of manufacture.
Procter often looks for ways to achieve more with less, using a material to perform multiple roles or reducing the need for additional components. It is a direct approach to design, shaped by technical knowledge, experimentation and an understanding of how an object will ultimately be made.
