Studiopepe
There is a wonderful tension between Scandinavian and Italian design—both emphasize simplicity with a meaning. Often, it is marked by a particular interest in enduring materials, one that we deeply relate to as we aspire to design objects made to last and only become more beautiful with time.
Studiopepe: An Architectural Approach to Product Design
Studiopepe was founded in Milan in 2006 by Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto. Working across interiors, product design and creative direction, the studio brings an architectural way of thinking to objects at a smaller scale. Composition, colour and material are considered in relation to the surrounding space, allowing individual designs to contribute to the atmosphere of an interior rather than being treated in isolation.
This approach is particularly relevant to the studio's work with rugs, where surface and texture become part of the spatial experience. In its work for Muuto, hand-tufted New Zealand wool is cut at different levels to create a raised pattern and changing areas of light and shadow. The result demonstrates how Studiopepe can translate ideas more commonly associated with interiors and architecture into a single functional object through material, texture and colour.
