Alex Gufler
Italian-born designer Alex Gufler began his career in jewellery-making before studying industrial design in Vienna. His furniture reflects this early attention to detail, combining refined forms with a deep understanding of materials, manufacturing and construction. His long-standing collaboration with TON has produced an extensive collection of seating and tables, including the internationally recognised Merano collection.
Alex Gufler: Furniture Defined by Form and Detail
Born in Merano, Italy, Alex Gufler began his creative career studying jewellery-making before turning to industrial design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. He established his own Vienna studio in 2010, developing furniture characterised by clean lines, precise detailing and a strong understanding of materials and manufacturing processes.
His extensive collaboration with TON has become a significant part of his furniture practice. Gufler works with the company's tradition of timber furniture and wood bending while developing distinctly contemporary forms across seating and tables. His designs balance visual refinement with practical considerations such as comfort, ergonomics and construction.
The Merano collection is one of the clearest expressions of this approach. Its chair and armchair combine a solid timber frame with moulded plywood seat and back components, creating a light, sculptural profile while maintaining comfort and strength. The collection has become TON's best-selling range worldwide and has received multiple international design awards, including Red Dot, Good Design and iF Design awards.
