Meet The Designer
David Geckeler
Berlin-based industrial designer David Geckeler is best known for the Nerd collection for Muuto, an award-winning reinterpretation of traditional timber seating. Combining Scandinavian furniture traditions with a contemporary approach to form and construction, Geckeler created Nerd around its distinctive intersection of seat and back, giving the chair and stools their instantly recognisable character.
David Geckeler: Award Winning Seating
David Geckeler studied industrial design in Potsdam, Copenhagen and Berlin before establishing his practice in the German capital. His work spans furniture, interiors, tableware and lighting, guided by an analytical approach and an interest in simplicity, detail and the relationship between people and the objects they use.
The Nerd collection for Muuto reinterprets the traditional timber chair through a distinctive construction of bent veneer shells and solid timber. The backrest intersects with the seat through a pronounced slot, creating a recognisable structural detail while giving the chair its individual character. Calm proportions and softly curved surfaces balance this unusual junction, allowing the design to feel both familiar and distinctly contemporary.
Originally recognised with the Muuto Talent Award, Nerd has since expanded from the dining chair into counter and bar stools and remains an important part of Muuto’s furniture collection.
