Frederic Sofia: Reimagining a French Design Classic
Frederic Sofia established his studio in 2000 following a background in mechanical engineering, marketing and self-published design. His practice spans industrial design and contemporary art, with an emphasis on understanding how designs are used and finding ways to improve them.
In 2004, Fermob commissioned Sofia to reinterpret the chairs and armchairs originally created in 1923 by the Paris parks department for the Jardin du Luxembourg. Sofia retained the recognisable curved slats and light character of the original seating while developing the idea into a broader aluminium furniture collection. Luxembourg has since expanded across dining, lounge and occasional furniture while maintaining a consistent connection to the original Paris garden design.
