Josef Hoffmann: A Pioneer of Modern Design

Austrian architect and designer Josef Hoffmann (1870–1956) played a central role in the transformation of European design at the beginning of the 20th century. After studying under architect Otto Wagner in Vienna, Hoffmann helped establish the Vienna Secession and, in 1903, co-founded the Wiener Werkstätte with Koloman Moser and Fritz Wärndorfer. The progressive workshop brought designers and craftspeople together and placed function, proportion, materials and craftsmanship at the centre of its work.

Hoffmann's furniture reflected the changing ideas of the period. His work moved between curved forms and increasingly strong geometric structures, with grids, squares and carefully controlled proportions becoming recurring elements of his design language. His influence extended well beyond furniture into architecture and interiors, including the Palais Stoclet in Brussels, where he conceived architecture, furniture and decorative arts as parts of a complete environment.

His influence remains visible in furniture still produced today. The foundations of the 811 Collection were developed by Hoffmann almost a century ago, combining a bentwood structure with woven cane and a distinctive interplay of straight and curved lines. TN continues to produce the 811, connecting Hoffmann's early modernist thinking with contemporary interiors and represents an important part of his furniture legacy.
