Studio Tolvanen: Function and Character
Founded in 2015 by designers Mika and Julie Tolvanen, Studio Tolvanen approaches product design through a balance of function and individual character. The husband-and-wife team works from its studio and workshop in Helsinki, designing furniture and everyday objects with an emphasis on making each piece intuitive to understand and use. Their work can respond to complex functional requirements without appearing visually complicated.
The studio draws inspiration from objects across different periods, looking at familiar forms and details before finding ways to reinterpret them. This results in designs that often appear simple at first glance, with character introduced through proportion, construction and subtle departures from convention. Rather than following a fixed aesthetic, Mika and Julie allow the function and context of each object to guide its development.
Studio Tolvanen works with furniture and design brands across Europe, North America and Asia, with projects extending from small everyday objects to complete furniture collections. At Huset, the studio is currently represented by the Reduce Paper Bin for Muuto, a practical object that reflects its broader approach to clear function and individual character.
