Tom Kelley: Less is More

Born in East Germany, Tom Kelley experienced significant political restrictions early in life before moving to the West in the 1970s. He went on to study in Aachen, Munich and Long Beach, California, building a career that has taken him across Europe, the United States and Asia. He later settled in Venice, placing him close to the Italian manufacturers and craftspeople with whom he worked.

This international experience has informed a design approach centred on simplicity and practicality. Kelley is associated with a “less is more” philosophy, reducing furniture to essential forms while balancing aesthetics with function. His work also reflects an interest in bringing established craft traditions together with contemporary materials and production methods.

Kelley's collaboration with TON has produced an extensive body of furniture, including the Ironica collection available at Huset. Characterised by its slender timber frame, distinctive spindle back and straightforward proportions, Ironica brings a familiar furniture language into a versatile contemporary form. Produced as both dining chairs and bar stools, the collection demonstrates Kelley's ability to create furniture with a clear identity through relatively simple elements. Ironica remains one of TON's long-standing best-selling collections.
