Julien De Smedt: Modular Design for Modern Spaces
Born in Brussels, Julien De Smedt studied architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London before working with Rem Koolhaas and later co-founding PLOT with Bjarke Ingels. He went on to establish JDS Architects, developing an international practice recognised for architecture that challenges conventional building types and explores new ways of organising space.
This architectural thinking carries naturally into De Smedt's product design. Rather than treating an object as a fixed composition, his work considers how individual elements can be combined, adapted and used differently according to their surroundings.
The Stacked Storage System for Muuto applies this approach to modular shelving. Developed around modules in different sizes and formats, the system can be combined into configurations that respond to the space, storage requirements and individual needs. Its simple geometric form allows each module to work independently or as part of a larger composition, bringing flexibility and architectural structure to shelving and storage.
