Iskos-Berlin: Material Innovation in Furniture and Lighting
Iskos-Berlin was founded in Copenhagen in 2010 by Boris Berlin and Aleksej Iskos, following many years working together at Komplot Design. Their practice spans furniture, industrial and graphic design, informed by a shared interest in materials, technology and the possibilities these can bring to familiar objects.
The studio describes design as a form of storytelling, where material, technology, form and function come together to give an object its identity. Experimentation plays an important role in this process, particularly in exploring how new materials and production methods can create different expressions and experiences.
This approach is evident in the Fiber collection for Muuto. Conceived as a new perspective on the familiar shell chair, Fiber was developed around an innovative composite shell containing wood fibres, giving its refined silhouette a distinctive matte, tactile surface. The collection has expanded across chairs, armchairs, stools and lounge seating, with different bases, upholstery and outdoor options extending the original idea across a broad range of settings.
Iskos-Berlin has also applied its material-led approach to lighting. The Under The Bell pendant for Muuto uses recycled polymer felt to create its large sculptural shade, which provides illumination while also helping absorb sound. Together, these collections demonstrate the studio's ability to use material and production as integral parts of a product's form and function
