Mika Tolvanen: Designed Around Use

Mika Tolvanen established his own practice after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2001. Working from his studio and workshop in Helsinki, he designs furniture and products for both residential and contract environments.

Tolvanen begins by considering where design is needed and how something will be used. This keeps the focus on purpose rather than creating an object that demands attention for its appearance alone. His work with Muuto applies this thinking across seating, tables and storage, including designs developed for different settings and ways of living.
